My favorite character from the Hunger Games series is… do I really have to choose just one? I actually think it’s Finnick. I know that’s odd — he’s kind of a jerk at the beginning and isn’t a MAJOR character. There’s just something about him that makes him seem like a good guy.

My favorite character is Haymitch Abernathy, as odd as it sounds. I was endeared that in his own twisted and tortured way, he somewhat became a father figure and that his pain from his experience made him take Peeta and Katniss experience to heart. I also liked that despite how unreliable he seemed to be, in the end, he would come through. He had a unique redemption about him unusual to those generally sick from the drink and I think he fought hard to help Katniss and Peeta escape this same fate.

So many good major characters. I really like Boggs. Seems like a good person to have as a friend and I like that he doesn’t give Katniss up with some of the things she isn’t suppose to do but does anyway. He seems more concerned about the people than the politics.

He lived for freedom and beauty and creation, and his murder really symbolized that the Capital was death to those things. His bravery and its consequence really broke my heart.

I am tempted to say Katniss because she is such a dynamic and determined girl but I am going to go with Peeta. Reason being: there is something to having a character like him in a book that is so complex. His simplicity, his earnestness broke my heart almost from the moment I met him. And regardless where you lie on the Peeta/Gale equation, you must admit that it is Peeta not Gale who softens the blow that is Katniss. There is a hardness and ruthlessness to Katniss that is made a bit more platable by her affection for Peeta (and Prim of course).

Rue, because it was obvious that her death was mourned by her whole district. I got the sense she had a much larger story that never got told and that she was fighting Panem in her own way. She made an impression on Katniss right form the start, and not just because she was as young as Prim.

Peeta is my favorite: A heart for reconciliation in contrast to Gale’s violence and hotheadedness. Despite the irony of how the narrative actually plays out, I feel Collins wrote Gale as the person you’re willing to die with but Peeta the person you’re willing to live for. Sublime.

Collins is so successful in making her characters real and likable that picking just one as a favorite is hard. Katniss came to mind first, then Peeta, then a flood of others, but I finally settled on Rue.

I love Rue for her ability to be creative in dire situations, for her ability to rightfully earn Katniss’ trust, for her spirit and agility. I love the interaction that unfolds between Rue and Katniss and so reveals Katniss’ gentler side. I love that Rue is valued by Katniss and that Rue continues to influence Katniss’ actions after her death. Perhaps Rue symbolizes the genuine openness and honesty so often found in children, qualities that rarely carry over intact into adulthood, qualities obviously not valued by the organizers of the Hunger Games who are willing to sacrifice children like Rue for the purpose of entertainment and control.

My obvious favorite character is Katniss (of course!) but another favorite character of mine is Finnick. He comes into the story seeming like nothing more than a pretty boy, and as they progress through the Games we get to see a deeper side to him. I think he and Katniss ultimately have a lot in common, and I think he just becomes a really interesting character, especially with his relationship with Annie and as the details of what his life is like in the Capitol are revealed.

While my first instinct was to say Katniss is my favorite character, upon further reflection I have to say that Haymitch is my favorite. While the Games have, in many ways, destroyed him, and the Capitol murdered everyone he loved, he is still able to pull himself together enough to help Katniss and Peeta win. I love his sarcasm, wit, and dedication to Katniss and Peeta, even though they don’t always see it. I was so happy that he lived in the end, and that he stayed in District 12 to watch over Katniss.

I love Katniss for her flaws and the perfection with which Collins writes her character, but Haymitch is my favorite because he is completely disillusioned yet somehow hopeful.

My favorite character is Katniss. She is the ultimate heroine, selfless, with a strong inner moral compass, always hard on herself, and even loathing of the celebrity status her selfless heroics have earned her. Katniss’s final arrow shot in the war comes not from the Mockingjay, The Girl Who Was on Fire, but rather the ordinary girl from District 12, who began this horrible adventure out of selfless love for her sister. And unfortunately for Coin and the rebels, that’s who she was all along.

My favorite character has to be Haymitch: he’s wonderfully flawed and has a tragic past, yet manages to steal every scene and cause quite a few laughs.

I’m a huge Hunger Games fan, so obviously I loved Katniss, it’d be hard to like the books if you didn’t :P She’s an incredibly strong character, and she does what she needs to do to protect the one’s she loves. She’s one of my favourite heroines and one that I greatly admire. Out of the boys though, I’m definitely partial to Peeta! The boy with bread won me over right away! :D
Thanks for this awesome giveaway, I’m really hoping I’ll get lucky and win myself a copy of The Girl who Was on Fire, it sounds like an amazing assortment of essays…ones that I actually want to read, unlike the ones I’ve been reading for class lately. :P haha
    Thanks again! :D

My favorite character in the Hunger Games is Rue… at first I was sure that she was playing Katniss, and that she’d turn on her, and then I was delighted when she ended up being one of the “good guys” so to speak!

Really? Just one character? hm… I gotta say Haymitch.

Well, that guy cracks me up when the situation is not so nice. He’s a drunkard, a victor, a broken man and a brave one.

This may be short but I salute the guy.

There were many characters to love in the Hunger Games trilogy, but if I have to crown one as my favorite, I would have to say that Cinna edges out Peeta by an excellently coifed hair.

Cinna’s belief in Katniss and the confidence and direction that he gives to her (not to mention the friendship when she so desperately needs it) really stands out in my mind as one of the most important things throughout the book.

I found Finnick Odair to be a very enjoyable character. I loved seeing him ‘change’ throughout the series. His love for Annie and his unwillingness to abandon that relationship were tender. I also liked that he never gave up on Katniss and the cause, even unto death.
