San Diego Comic-Con 2012

By June 18th, 2012

Headed to SDCC next month? Hey, us too!

Here’s where to find us at Comic-Con, what we’re up to, and what we’re giving away.

Location, Location, Location (#4300)

This year, thanks of Friend of Smart Pop Jamie Chambers, we’ll be front and audience-left-of-center in the exhibit hall, at Booth #4300.

We’re excited about this for multiple reasons:

  1. The company (we’re sharing space with Jamie’s Signal Fire Studios and Dead Gentleman Productions)
  2. We’ll be only twenty feet from Starbucks
  3. We’ll be a lot easier for you to find!

We’re listed in two places in the exhibit hall guide, and you’ll still be able to pick up a sampler from our table at #J7, but #4300 is where the action is.

Free Stuff

We know the lines for panels at Comic-Con are long. (Really, really long.) So we suggest stopping by our booth early for our free Smart Pop Preview 2012.

This is 2012’s version of our yearly sampler volume, with standalone essays and excerpts from In Pursuit of Spenser, Beyond the Wall, The Panem Companion, and Ender’s World–plus, as a bonus, excerpts from two of our parent publisher BenBella Books’ 2012 pop culture titles: insider memoir Christian Bale and Claudia Christian’s Babylon Confidential. This year, it clocks in at 144-pages of between-panel entertainment.

Along with the sampler, you can pick up a free Smart Pop button, so as to better adorn your convention badge lanyard.

We’re also starting a new tradition: limited edition Smart Pop buttons. Every year, we’ll dress up our logo to match one of that year’s new books. This year, it’s Beyond the Wall. These are free, but we aren’t making many. If you want one, come ask! And we’ll be giving them out, too, with tickets to our in-booth Beyond the Wall book signing on Sunday.

Speaking of . . .

Here’s our signings schedule, broken down by day.

Christian BaleFriday

Harrison Cheung and Nicola Pittam, authors of Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman (June 2012)

Note: We’ll be selling copies of the book

Autographing Area: 3-4 PM
In-Booth: 11 AM – 12 PM

Claudia Christian, actress — Babylon 5, author of Babylon Confidential: A Memoir of Love, Sex, and Addiction (November 2012)

Note: Claudia will be signing free excerpts of Babylon Confidential

Autographing Area: 11 AM – 12 PM
In-Booth: 3-4 PM

James Lowder (editor); Myke Cole, Caroline Spector and Ned Vizzini (contributors) — Beyond the Wall

Note: We’ll be selling copies of the book
Note #2: Unfortunately, Ned had a last minute conflict!

In-Booth: 11 AM – 12 PM

Harrison and Claudia’s signings are unticketed. The Beyond the Wall signing, however, is ticketed . . . because we’re using the tickets to give away books!

Here’s how it’ll work:

  1. Stop by the booth anytime before the signing on Sunday.
  2. Pick your signing ticket out of the bucket.
  3. If the back is marked, your copy of Beyond the Wall at Sunday’s signing is free!

If you don’t win a free copy, we’ll have copies available for sale. We’ll have at least as many book copies as tickets; your signing ticket also guarantees book availability. (And you can always just get your copy of the Smart Pop Preview 2012 signed.)

Copies of Beyond the Wall aren’t the only things we’re giving away . . .

We’ve got two big giveaways going on throughout the con this year:

Win an Advance Galley of Ender’s World

Ender’s World: Fresh Perspectives on the SF Classic Ender’s Game, edited by Orson Scott Card, comes out in February 2013. But we’re giving 25 Comic-Con attendees the chance to read it first.

Come by and ask us to scan your badge to be entered to win an advance copy of Ender’s World. We’ll pick the winners after the end of the convention and notify you via email. Then we’ll ship you your copy, hot off the presses, as soon as they’re printed!

Shadowhunters and DownworldersWin Official Mortal Instruments Jewelry + Shadowhunters and Downworlders

We’re a little bit enamored with Viviane Hebel’s Mortal Instruments jewelry. (She also does jewelry for Holly Black’s Curse Workers series, among others.)

So in addition to giving away 10 copies of our January 2013 book Shadowhunters and Downworlders: A Mortal Instruments Reader, edited by Cassandra Clare, we’re also giving away one Binding Rune Split Pendant. (It only seems appropriate, since we use the binding rune on our cover!)

As with our Ender’s World giveaway, just stop by and ask us to scan your badge to enter.

Mostly, though . . .

. . . if you’re reading this, we just want you to come say hi. We’d love to meet you! And hear your ideas for future Smart Pop books, if you have any.

Heather and/or I will be at the booth from preview night all the way through end of day Sunday. We hope we’ll see you there!

  3. Emily

Hi! I’ am a Huge fan of the Mortal Instruments and was So excited to find you were at comic-con this year! I didnt have to luck to go myself but my uncle goes every year so I had him stop by your booth to pick up your Shadow hunters things for me. Unfortunately, he tells me that he only got bookmarks and a book, not the binding rune pendant. This made me sad as i had been looking forward to getting the pendant. i was wondering what might have happened that he hadnt gotten that as it says that the pendant was being given away also.

    • Emily

sorry i just realized that you were only giving away one, not many. I’m so glad you guys got to go for Comic-Con this year though!

      • Leah

Hi Emily! If we entered your uncle to win the book on your behalf, we entered him to win the pendant, too– they’re the same giveaway. (And I think I remember him, based on your story; if so, we definitely did both.) He should be bringing you back the bookmark . . . and, it sounds like, a copy of our free Smart Pop sampler.
