A Friday Night Lights Companion‘s Fan Favorite Tournament: Winner Announcement

By No Comments

Those of you who have been following our A Friday Night Lights Companion‘s Fan Favorite Tournament know that on Friday the final match came down to Tim Riggins and Coach Eric Taylor. Both accumulated a lot of votes (and a lot of supportive tweets!) throughout the weekend, but only one can win now. The Fan Favorite winner is . . .

Coach Eric Taylor

With 2/3 as many votes as Coach, Tim definitely held his own. But as many fans have said either in comments or tweets, Coach is the heart of the show; without him, there would be no Friday Night Lights.

Last Friday Night Lights Twitter Party (And Finale Thoughts)

By 3 Comments

We had our final Friday Night Lights Twitter party this past Friday night, and aside from the show itself, I’m genuinely going to miss the live-tweet sessions we hosted each Friday. We got the opportunity to know (and also know better) so many Friday Night Lights fans, and talk through so many different plot lines together, from the head-scratching ones (Julie and the TA!) to the heartbreaking (Vince and his dad). As the finale cued up at minute one and then faded at minute ninety, we also got to say goodbye to Dillon, Texas together, which felt so much more fulfilling than saying goodbye alone.

Some highlights from the finale and the final Smart Pop Twitter party!

First, we gave away a handful of …

A Friday Night Lights Companion‘s Fan Favorite Tournament: Day 3

It’s Day 3 of the Fan Favorite Tournament, and the competition is heating up. If you’re just joining us: To celebrate the release of A Friday Night Lights Companionand to mourn the end of the show—this week we’re putting all of your favorite characters up against each other in a bracket match to determine which character is the Fan Favorite.

Highlights from the last couple of days:

  • Tim Riggins won by a (not entirely unexpected) landslide—poor Landry didn’t stand a chance.
  • Counting the votes that came in before our poll malfunction on day 1, Lyla just barely beat out Tyra.
  • Mindy Riggins held her own against Tami Taylor in what turned out to be a very close match, but Tami prevailed in the

A Friday Night Lights Companion‘s Fan Favorite Tournament: Day 2

For those of you who are joining us late, to celebrate the release of A Friday Night Lights Companion and to mourn Friday Night Lights, this week we’re putting all of your favorite characters head-to-head in a bracket match to determine which character is the Fan Favorite. Due to a few technical difficulties yesterday morning, we’ve extended voting on our first four match-ups until 2 PM; if you didn’t vote yesterday, you can do so now here. And continue on below to vote (with a brand new, much more stable poll system) on the next four matches!

A Friday Night Lights Companion‘s Fan Favorite Tournament: Day 1

By 12 Comments

As fellow Friday Night Lights fans, we understand how supremely difficult it is to choose one favorite character out of such an amazing and loveable cast. We’re here, however, to take on that challenge and—in honor of our new book, A Friday Night Lights Companion (read more here)—name a Fan Favorite by launching a five-day tournament that will end on Friday along with the final season of Friday Night Lights on NBC (don’t forget to join us for the live-tweet!).

Every day this week we’re posting polls pairing off some of your favorite characters from the show. Your job: to come and vote for your favorites. We’ll narrow them down daily until there’s one character left who will be crowned Favorite.

To help you with these …

Announcing the Friday Night Lights Companion Fan Favorite Tournament

By 13 Comments

The series finale of Friday Night Lights airs next Friday, and in an attempt to forestall the inevitable depression (and to celebrate the impending release of A Friday Night Lights Companion), we’re hosting a week-long tournament to determine Friday Night Light‘s fan favorite character.

Beginning on Monday, we’ll be pairing up 16 of the most well-loved Friday Night Lights characters for fan vote in a five-day fight to the finish—with the winner announced on Monday, July 18. Your job: to come and vote for your favorite (and to spread the word!). We’ll narrow down our bracket daily until there’s one character left who will be crowned Favorite.

Every day we’ll have Jen Chaney, entertainment blogger for the Washington Post (and the woman …

A Friday Night Lights Companion

Last season, we did an official introduction post for our Fall 2010 books. This season, we’re trying something new: officially announcing our Spring 2011 titles individually, each in their own post. If you’ve missed any, you can check them all out here.

This book was (sad to say) not my idea.

This book was the idea of our marketing manager, Jennifer, who has championed Friday Night Lights to those of us in-office for years—as much, I suspect, to have someone to discuss episodes with as to get an anthology greenlit. “You have to watch it,” she’d insist. Repeatedly. “It’s the best show on television.”

I’ve loved a lot of shows, but I’ve never been moved to call any of them “the best.” …

Friday Night Lights Episode, 5.8, Twitter Party Recap

By No Comments

Just in time for a new Friday Night Lights episode tonight, here’s a recap of all the fun Leah and I had last week, tweeting up a storm during our favorite TV drama, with the help of A Friday Night Lights Companion contributor, Robin Wasserman (@robinwasserman).

First note-worthy event of the episode: Coach Taylor swinging a tricycle part at Julie’s sleazy TA, who had the nerve to show up at her door. (The nerve to show up, but the good sense to run away as soon as Eric appeared in the doorway.)

As Leah said, “That was possibly the most threatening use of a pink tricycle part ever.” (Although, admittedly, I said “As badass as Coach is, breaking the TA’s taillight with Gracie Belle’s tricycle …
