A Taste of True Blood: Cover Poll

By Leah January 29th, 201026 Comments

One of the things I’m most excited about with the new site and this blog is the ability it gives us to have you all help shape the topics we choose to put out books on, and the books themselves.

We’re working on an anthology on True Blood (to be released this June), and we wanted to let you weigh in on the cover. We have two gorgeous potential covers (designed by the lovely and talented people at Faceout Studio), shown below. Which one would you pick?

(Feel free to tell us more in the comments!)

We’ll leave the poll open all weekend, and announce the winner on Monday.

  1. Karen

I chose B, but would like it much better if the bottle actually looked like a True Blood and not a Bud. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see A well enough to form an opinion.

  2. Leah

Visibility’s a great point, Karen! Let me see what I can do. :)

And if B wins there are a few things we’d want to do before declaring it final: probably modify the bottle (though we can’t make it look exactly like the TruBlood bottle, unfortunately!), and do some work on the subtitle, which is a little hard to read.

  3. Vera Nazarian

As someone who’s designed hundreds of covers for Norilana BOoks, I think we need to have the font of A on the design for B.

The font on A does not pop (especially the TRUE BLOOD part red fades into the near-similar red background), but it is more appropriate, more like the font used in the TV series logo and DVD.

The B bottle design is more interesting.

So, if we can combine the elements it would be best, and most reminiscent of the V show and DVD covers. It would be also immediately recognizable by fans a as a True Blood “product.”

  4. Elena

I agree with Vera…the actual cover of B is far superior, but I much prefer the font in A.

  5. Theora

I think the bottle design is a lot better, largely because fans can see how it ties into the creation of this world.

P.S. I have a kinda off-topic question. Can you say if it seems like A Taste of True Blood will just be on the television series, or if there will also be essays about Charlaine Harris’s novels?

  6. Leah

@Theora – After a lot of thought, we decided to stick with the television show. Trying to cover both universes, when there are nearly as many similarities as differences between them, felt like too big of a bite. I’d rather us just do *True Blood* and do it well, then try and do it all and potentially have the essays suffer for it. (That said, it’s pretty hard to talk about the show without talking at least a little about the books.)

  7. Scout

I vote for A even though the true blood bottle initially seemed to be the better idea. But A just looks so much better, B rather boring and somehow too straight.
Also the design of A reminds me of the trailer.

A says “True Blood”. B doesn’t – probably, as was pointed out before, because the bottle just isn’t a true blood bottle.

  8. Carol Poole

I like B overall, but prefer the font in A, so I’m in agreement with Vera and Elena. I think the bottle looks appealing; who wouldn’t want to pick up a book with a bottle like that on the cover? It’s like picking up a nice cold beer.

  9. annie

    B. Definitely B.

  10. Emma

I am the opposite to everyone else. I like the background of ‘A’ but font of ‘B’. ‘B’ makes True Blood look a bit tacky and just about blood and vampires, but ‘A’ reflects the whole thing and is reminiscent of the excellent opening credits.

  11. Mikhail Lyubansky

I agree that cover A was hard to see. I like the concept of B better but there’s something about it that isn’t quite right. Maybe it’s the font.

  12. Andrew Zimmerman Jones

I agree with some other commentators – the graphic with the bottle is better, mostly because of the play on the word “taste” and the image of the bottle, but the font is a little fancy for True Blood.

  13. Alisa Kwitney

As a former comics editor, I think the bottle design definitely pops more, no pun intended. However, am in agreement that the font is wrong, and that the bottle needs tweaking. I believe that it is the cap that makes it look too much like a Bud. I also like the way “Completely Unauthorized” is floating on the top of cover A, and would try to incorporate that as well. The angled, floating font of A captures something of the jump-cut feel of the series’ opening sequence.

    Way to overthink, right?

  14. Kevin

I don’t like either of them (for reasons other posters have already discussed) and don’t see how a combination of their good bits will work.

  15. Sister Cuervo

I agree, I prefer the contrasting font colors, but the design of B if better and more eye-catching. There is too much empty space on A and I don’t particularly care for the tilted lettering.

  16. Elizabeth

I like A best. The design reminds me of the opening credits for the show.

  17. Aurora

I am not a fan of Cover B because it is a beer bottle not a Tru Blood bottle… it does not fit at all….Cover A is ok…..I am not blown away by either cover to be honest but Cover A would be a better choice over Cover B

  18. Christina

    I like B the best.

  19. Shadaliza

Leah, I am trying to send you an email but it comes back to me. I would like to talk to you about the promotion of the book, please contact me.

  20. Lori

I chose B! I just like the design of it. The font is classy and sexy just like the show… oozes sex! LOVE IT!!!

  21. carol cooper

I agree with Vera! Transpose the more exciting cover font onto a snazzier bottle image.

  22. ParaNoira

A reminded me of the opening credits. I like the flow.

  23. Heather Jo

I like the font in A…but i like the bottle in B…(i agree with Karen, it should more like a True Blood bottle)

  24. Sarah

Font from A on B design

  25. Ruth

I prefer cover A. I love the way it looks like the title sequence to the movie where the blood forms across and then “true blood” comes in focus. I think it could have been better if in the background you see something like the creepy house (actually a restaurant) in the Louisiana swamps or some other memorable image in the credits, which, since they are places can not be copywrited like I’m sure the Tru:Blood bottle is.
